Though you have transitioned on sweet spirit, know that your legacy lives in your beautiful daughter Alia Rose, and in the countless melodic classics you left behind. I know that somewhere out there in the hereafter you are still creating poetically touching lyrics and, as quoted by a good friend of mine at the memorial services of another good friend, “Well done, Teena… Well done”.

19 Year Old Murdered In Broad Daylight (reflections of writer) GD

East Palo Alto has been home for many years, and I remember the first day we moved in. I remember a neighbor kid knocking on our door asking our parents if they had any other little boys to play with. It’s funny how you can remember certain snapshots in life so vividly. That kid and his family have been longtime friends of ours for over 4 decades. He and his siblings are parents and grandparents now. My brother and sister are also parents now, and I am the proud of uncle of 8 nieces and nephews.

Over the years I have witnessed the city of East Palo Alto evolve from a small town with a bevy of corner convenient stores into a bustling city with a Four Seasons Hotel, an IKEA, and numerous other department stores but, in spite of all that progressive development, one thing continues to occur.

Senseless killing.

His name was, Brandon Lamar Bradford Jr., and he was 19 years old. He was gunned down in broad day light yesterday, Wednesday 12/14/2011. My sincere condolences go out to his family and friends.

RIP, Little Solider, may your death inspire peace ….

17 Year OLd & A Cancer Breakthrough!!! (reflections of a writer) GD

While listening to KBLX, a radio station here in the San Francisco Bay Area, this morning I discovered that a 17 year old discovered a way for medicine to strike only the cancer cells in a person with cancer, which means that treatment would become more effective in fighting it (and perhaps eliminating it). Then, they added this: And for this and many other reasons we continue to invest in educating our youth. QUIT CUTTING OPTIONS FOR EDUCATION! And, I couldn’t agree with them more. If the powers that be continuing cutting the nose to spite the face, there will soon be nothing left to cut. (reflections of a writer) GD

One Year to Love

“Who’s there?”

“Don’t be afraid, I am not here to hurt you. I was sent from light years away, to spend one year with you and show you the love that The Almighty has in store for you,” the voice said.

“Where are you? Why can’t I see you?” I asked nervously.

“I am right here,” he said, as he drifted from the darkness into the light of my bedroom.

“…but you’re half my age,” I said, confused by his admission.

“Why don’t people understand that, when it comes to love, age is just another ploy by fear to interject and remove possibilities?” He said.

“Perhaps it’s because the age difference eventually does become a problem… but, forget about all that, what did you mean when you said you were sent from light years away to show me…” He completed my sentence.

“Love… Yes that is what I said. The strength you displayed last year when you walked away from that relationship was amazing, yet you still manage to doubt yourself and question your strength,” He whispered, as he moved closer into my personal space.

I could feel the warmth coming from his body as he stood close enough to move in for a neck-kiss. No sooner did I complete that thought did his lips move across the base of my neck in the back.

“Don’t be afraid,” He said.

“This isn’t right,” I told him, moving forward and away from his tender, moist lips.

“What are you frightened of?”

“Nothing,” I said, annoyed by his correct assumption.

“You walked away from that relationship last year because you knew you deserved better. You knew that he could never completely give himself to you because he was still lodged inside of another soul’s heart,” he told me.

“Okay, that did it. How do you speak of things about my life with such certainty as if you were there witnessing what took place?” I said, spinning around to face him from a distance.

He smiled.

“Because, I am love…” was all he said.

I was dumfounded.

His beauty exceeded his exterior…

What shone from within his interior intrigued my spiritual base. It was as if he was revealing to me some ancient secret sought by many, but only found by some. I knew that I would allow him to show me whatever it was he was sent to show me, because my hunger for love seemed to be overshadowing my senses.

“You are love?” I asked, rhetorically.

I Have Only Myself To Blame (reflections of a writer) GD

A deep longing can really alter perception and wound the spirit. Over the years I have learned a great deal about myself and know that I have the tendency to wear my heart on my sleeve — and it’s out in view far too often.

Susceptible to roving eyes that are interested in seizing an opportunity to benefit either emotionally or monetarily, we wander into situations out of curiosity in search of whatever it is that is missing within ourselves, trying to fill that void in our lives.

What I had to grasp onto, eventually, is that sometimes we allow ourselves to be in the role of “victim”, and we wallow around in self-pity, immersing ourselves in despair and cluttering our spirits with the aftermath of heartbreak, but our depression really is self-inflicted.

If we let our hearts lead us during every encounter then we are really setting ourselves up to be disappointed, however, if we lead with an understanding that is fueled with courage and strength, then we walk into these situations fully equipped and prepared for any outcome.

When I learned to confidently say, “I have only myself to blame,” that’s when I gained full control of what I call, my life.
